My non-verbal autistic nephew, Bryson, was grievously injured and harmed by someone who was supposed to protect him, a teacher's aide at his school. Despite the clear video evidence and pictures of neglect and abuse, when we sought justice, the District Attorney rejected the case, stating "there wasn't enough bodily injuries" For Bryson, who cannot vocally express his pain or fear, this was more than enough harm; it was a failure of the system meant to safeguard him.

Children with autism, especially those like Bryson who are non-verbal, rely heavily on the protection and advocacy of the adults around them. They are some of the most vulnerable in our community, and they deserve our utmost care and attention. The decision to dismiss Bryson's case not only denies him justice but also sends a horrifying message that the abuse of children with disabilities is permissible if it's not deemed severe enough.

Statistics show that children with disabilities are 3 to 4 times more likely to be victims of abuse than their non-disabled peers. In the classrooms where they should feel safe, they are at risk, and when the justice system fails to take their experiences seriously, it perpetuates a cycle of violence and neglect.
