The Issue

In July 2024 My Friends son's life was tragically cut short in Spain. Brett Dryden, a cherished friend and vibrant young man, met with an untimely death—a deadly blow to his family and friends. His heartbroken family was left to grapple not only with their profound loss but also with the unwelcome burden of unraveling the mysteries surrounding his death. The authorities, instead of extending a helping hand, have turned their backs, leaving the family to self-fund and manage their own investigation. This story is not an isolated incident; rather, it is part of a broader pattern of neglect and injustice faced by many British residents and tourists in Spain and the Canary Islands including Josh Rogers, Nathan Ozman & James ‘Jemsie’ Nunan.. And many more.

The Guardia Civil, responsible for maintaining law and order, have consistently failed to investigate deaths of British nationals adequately. The British Foreign Office has reported numerous instances where the Spanish authorities have been less than forthcoming in these tragic situations. Families are left without support, grappling with the complexities of a foreign legal system while mourning their loved ones. This is a humanitarian plea, urging the British and Spanish governments to take these matters seriously and ensure justice is swiftly served.

Alarmingly, the British population in Spain is substantial, with at least 300,000 British nationals known to be residing there. Each year, millions more travel as tourists, drawn by the enchanting allure of Spanish culture and landscape of the Canary Islands. Unfortunately, many of these individuals find themselves in vulnerable situations, unfamiliar with local customs and legal processes, making them easy victims of crime and injustice.

We demand an immediate investigation into Brett's murder and the examination of other similar cases that were neglected by the Guardia Civil. Furthermore, we call on the British government to ensure Spanish authorities uphold just and transparent investigations for any crimes involving British nationals.

Our goal is to secure justice and provide closure for bereaved families. To achieve this, the following actions are necessary:

1. The initiation of an impartial and thorough investigation into Brett's death and all unsolved cases involving British nationals in Spain.

2. Improved communication channels and cooperation between the British government and the Spanish authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in investigations.

3. Establishment of legal support services for British residents and tourists in Spain to navigate the legal system effectively.

The safety and dignity of British citizens should never be compromised. Please support us in demanding justice and systemic change. Sign this petition to urge the British and Spanish governments to acknowledge and address these grave concerns, ensuring the safety and security of British citizens in Spain and the Canary Islands. Your signature can be the change agent that prevents another family from enduring such heartbreaking neglect and injustice.
