Guardia Civil

The Guardia Civil is a national law enforcement agency in Spain. Founded in 1844, it operates as both a gendarmerie and a military force, charged with policing duties to maintain order and ensure public safety. Structured under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defence, the agency is primarily responsible for the prevention of crimes, protection of the environment, crowd and traffic control among other national security duties. It is recognizable by its emblematic dark green uniform and the tricornio hat. The Guardia Civil has been an integral part of Spanish history and society, contributing significantly to national security.
