Demand Justice for Brandon Mitchell, Shot by Des Moines, Iowa Police

The Issue

https://justiceforbrandonmitchell.my.canva.site/

As someone personally affected by this tragic incident, I am seeking justice for the late Brandon Mitchell. He was an unarmed individual who was shot and killed by police in Des Moines, Iowa. Despite his past mistakes, at the time of his death, he was living a reformed life and making an effort to correct his past wrongs. Yet his life was cut short in an abrupt manner, without being given a fair chance to rebuild his life.

The fatal shooting of felons, even those attempting reform, raises daunting questions about our justice system. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, over 600,000 individuals return from prisons each year, seeking a fresh start but face a myriad of challenges, not least being the fear of deadly force used by the police (Prison Policy Initiative, 2019). It is our duty as conscientious citizens to ensure that their right to life and fair treatment is not infringed upon due to their past.

Further compounding the issue is that according to a study in The American Journal of Public Health, unarmed victims of police shootings were disproportionately likely to be black or other minorities (The American Journal of Public Health, 2016). This highlights the potential role of racial profiling and discrimination within such incidents, making it a pressing civil rights issue that needs to be addressed.

We demand a thorough and comprehensive investigation into Brandon Mitchell's fatal shooting. Law enforcement officers must be held accountable for their actions, promoting transparency and rebuilding public trust. It is high time that we raise our voice against the corruption within the law enforcement system that denied Brandon his chance of living a renewed life. Only through such steps can we hope to prevent such future tragedies and foster a justice system that values the life of every single citizen.

Please sign this petition and help us bring justice to Brandon and all those who have suffered similar fates.
