American journalist Bilal Abdul Kareem has been unlawfully detained in Syria, without charges and without access to legal counsel. This situation is deeply personal to me, and I am compelled to call for immediate action to address this grave injustice.

Detaining an individual without charge, denying access to a lawyer, and withholding information about their condition or precise location violates fundamental principles under international human rights law. This not only impacts Bilal's freedom and safety but also sets a dangerous precedent that endangers journalists worldwide.

Through his courageous reporting, Bilal has dedicated himself to shedding light on the important stories and voices often overlooked. Now, we must raise our voices to shed light on his plight and demand action from the authorities responsible for his detention.

We call on the international community and relevant authorities to take urgent action to:

• Immediately disclose Bilal Abdul Kareem's whereabouts and condition.
• Ensure he is granted access to legal representation without further delay.
• Either formally charge him, if there is valid evidence, or release him unconditionally.

His arbitrary detention raises serious concerns under international human rights law, and we cannot remain silent. This is a call for justice, a call for transparency, and a call to uphold the basic rights that every individual deserves.
