Demand justice for all victims of sexual abuse
The Issue
When I was just 13 years old, my life was turned upside down by someone I should have been able to trust - my own cousin. Despite having sufficient evidence and the support of the police, the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to take my abuser to court. Why? Because he had no prior convictions and was considered "not a risk in the public interest." This is a grave injustice.
My story is not an isolated case; it speaks to a much larger issue facing countless victims of sexual abuse. Too many abusers walk free due to this loophole, leaving victims to suffer in silence, often for the rest of their lives. The system supposed to protect us is failing far too often, allowing perpetrators to avoid accountability and continue their lives without consequence.
The current "no harm in the public interest" policy is deeply flawed. It fails to recognize the severe, lifelong impact sexual abuse has on victims and instead prioritizes the unblemished record of the accused over justice. This loophole must be closed to ensure that all abusers are brought to trial, regardless of their criminal history.
We urge the Crown Prosecution Service to reform their policies and ensure that decisions are based on the trauma experienced by victims, not just the past records of abusers. Let's fight to hold abusers accountable for their actions without exception, and work towards a justice system that truly serves justice.
Join me in demanding an end to this miscarriage of justice. Sign this petition to push for critical changes in our legal system to protect and vindicate victims of sexual abuse everywhere.
