The Issue

Growing up in Halifax, I have witnessed firsthand the harsh realities faced by communities marginalized due to environmental racism. As an advocate for change, the plight of Africville resonates deeply with me. This once-thriving Black Nova Scotian community, rich with history and culture, was unceremoniously dismantled starting in 1960. The residents of Africville were forced off their properties, their homes destroyed, with promises of compensation and better living conditions that were never truly fulfilled.

For years, the descendants of Africville have waited for justice and acknowledgement from the government bodies that allowed this travesty to occur. The new Environmental Racism Act gives us an opportunity to address these historic injustices, and it's imperative that historical wrongs, like the forced eviction of Africville, are acknowledged and rectified.

The case Nelson v Halifax, currently awaiting a decision by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, is a crucial step in achieving justice and fairness for the marginalized community of Africville. It is time for the court to take action and deliver a decision that compensates the descendants of Africville, recognizing their suffering and supporting their renewed efforts to preserve their heritage.

Inaction perpetuates the effects of past injustices and delays healing. Supporting this petition is not only an act of justice for Africville but also a powerful statement against environmental racism. By signing, you stand with the people of Africville and contribute to a future where communities aren't sacrificed in the name of progress.

Join us in urging the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia to make a decision on Nelson v Halifax and compensate Africville residents fairly and transparently. Sign this petition and demand justice rooted in integrity and historical recognition.
