“We demand justice and transparency for Javone Anthony Gibb-Wright, a 21-year-old man who has been unjustly incarcerated and placed in solitary confinement. His current condition is dire, he lies in a coma with no explanation given to his mother. This is not just a case of unfair sentencing; this is a human rights crisis.”

The Issue:
We demand immediate justice and transparency for Javone Anthony Gibb-Wright, a 21-year-old Black man who is currently incarcerated at South Central Correctional Center in Licking, MO for a first-time offense of tampering with a motor vehicle. Despite the non-violent nature of his charge, Javone was sentenced to six years in prison, an extreme punishment that highlights the racial and sentencing disparities in Missouri’s criminal justice system.

However, Javone’s situation has now become a life-threatening crisis. He has been placed in solitary confinement without just cause, and he now lies in a coma ”with no clear explanation provided to his distraught mother or legal representatives. This lack of transparency is both alarming and unacceptable.

Why This Matters:

• Excessive Sentencing: A six-year sentence for a first-time, non-violent offense is extreme. Many individuals with similar charges receive probation or significantly lower sentences.

• Solitary Confinement & Human Rights Violations: Studies show that prolonged solitary confinement can cause severe psychological and physical harm, often amounting to torture (Amnesty International, ACLU).

• Lack of Transparency: Javone’s family has not been given a clear explanation for his medical condition. His mother deserves to know why her son is in a coma and what led to this tragic turn of events.

Our Demands:

We call upon Missouri state officials and South Central Correctional Center to:

1. Release all medical records and incident reports regarding Javone’s current condition. His mother and legal team have the right to know what happened.

2. Launch an independent investigation into the circumstances leading up to his coma, including any mistreatment while in solitary confinement.

3. Review and reconsider his excessive sentencing, especially given that this was a non-violent, first-time offense.

4. Implement criminal justice reforms to prevent future cases of extreme sentencing and lack of transparency in Missouri prisons.
