The Issue

In 2010, I survived a harrowing incident of gun violence in Illinois, an experience that undeniably changed my life. Yet, rather than finding solace and support in the aftermath, I faced a disheartening reality. The state systems failed me—I was left without housing, rehabilitation, mental-health care, or financial support. No one helped me understand my rights as a crime victim, and I was denied the justice and assistance that survivors desperately need.

My story is not unique. In Illinois, countless gun violence survivors struggle to find their footing after trauma. Many are left to navigate the complex and overwhelming aftermath on their own, without adequate resources or guidance from the state. It is crucial that we address these systemic shortcomings and provide the necessary support to those who have endured such devastating violence.

We demand that Illinois officials thoroughly review how survivors' rights were handled in past cases, including my own, to ensure that every right and form of assistance available under the law is accessible and timely. Gun violence survivors deserve clarity and answers, and it is imperative that we receive the justice we were promised.

Moreover, Illinois lawmakers must establish immediate stabilization support for future survivors. This includes ensuring access to safe housing, financial stability programs, comprehensive mental health care, rehabilitation services, disability assistance, and effective victim-navigation support. By implementing these essential resources, we can ensure that survivors are not abandoned in their darkest times.

It is time for Illinois to recognize the urgent needs of gun violence survivors and take actionable steps towards creating a support system that holds the state accountable and protects its citizens. Please sign this petition to demand justice and support for all survivors of gun violence in Illinois.
