Demand justice and fair compensation for Robodebt victims
The issue
On the 30th of May 2019, my son, Jarrad Madgwick, received a notice of a debt asserted against him, which soon led him to make the devastating decision to take his own life. This all unfolded in the span of just a few hours. It was an unimaginable tragedy that no parent should ever have to endure.
Shortly after finding my son on the 3rd of June 2019, I reached out to Services Australia to report his death and to contest the validity of this debt. In response, the Minister at the time directed that the debt be waived. However, in an unfathomable turn of events, the debt in question was not only raised but also waived on the 4th of June 2019, after Jarrad's death had been confirmed to the authorities.
Now, I am faced with an injustice of another kind. The Commonwealth is using the fact that they waived Jarrad's debt as an excuse to exclude me from participating in the Class Action regarding the Robodebt scheme. This betrayal is incomprehensible and adds further hurt to an already unbearable situation.
My son's tragic story is not an isolated incident. The Robodebt program has affected thousands of individuals across the country, many of whom were just as innocent and undeserving of such torment as Jarrad was. This automated system, which operated with significant errors and moral ambiguity, has inflicted harm on countless Australians, causing undue stress, mental anguish, and in worst cases, loss of life.
It is critical that all victims of the Robodebt scheme, like my son, are recognized and adequately compensated for the suffering they have endured. Those who can prove their innocence should not be barred from justice due to technicalities and bureaucratic oversight. The impact of this scheme must be acknowledged, and healing must begin.
I am calling on Services Australia and the Australian government to ensure fair compensation for all affected by the Robodebt scheme. Your signatures can help bring about this change and prevent future injustices. Jarrad deserved more, and so do all the victims.
Please sign this petition to demand accountability and fair compensation for Robodebt victims. Let us bring justice for Jarrad and ensure no other family suffers as we have.
