Demand justice and accountability for domestic and sexual abuse survivors
The Issue
Eight years ago, I made the difficult decision to separate from my abusive partner. This journey, however, has not been easy. I still find myself fighting for a fresh start, and unfortunately, my story is far from unique. Many survivors of domestic and sexual abuse endure a continuous struggle within a justice system that often falls short in ensuring accountability and justice for the victims.
The prevalence of domestic violence and sexual abuse is alarming. According to the World Health Organization, about 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Despite these staggering numbers, the justice system frequently fails to hold perpetrators accountable, leaving survivors feeling insecure and marginalized.
For those who dare to speak up, the road to justice is paved with obstacles. Many survivors encounter disbelief, victim-blaming, and a lack of empathy from the authorities meant to protect them. Cases can take years to process, often requiring the victims to relive their trauma repeatedly, with no guarantee of a just outcome.
We demand changes to the current systems of law enforcement and judicial proceedings.
- Implementation of exhaustive training programs for law enforcement officers to ensure they handle domestic violence and sexual assault cases with the seriousness they warrant.
- Establishment of specialized units with trained officers and investigators to handle these cases, ensuring that victims are treated with respect and that their cases are prioritized.
- A review and reform of prosecutorial practices to elevate the rate of convictions in addition to providing quicker case resolutions.
These actions can bring us closer to a justice system that survivors can rely on – a system where they are met with understanding rather than skepticism, fairness rather than doubt.
Join me in demanding a justice system that upholds justice and accountability for all survivors. Sign this petition to call for crucial reforms that will make a difference in the lives of countless individuals affected by domestic and sexual abuse. Together, we can work towards a world of true justice and equality.
One particularly troubling case that has emerged is that of 93-year-old Malcolm Phillips, who, despite being found guilty of sexual abuse, has been granted an absolute discharge. This decision is not only incomprehensible but also an affront to the bravery and suffering endured by his victims-Angela Radford, Kelly Lee, and Karen Bentham. These individuals have shown immense courage by coming forward, only to witness their abuser escaping meaningful consequences.
We must hold our judiciary to higher standards. Judicial accountability is crucial to ensure fair and just outcomes.
We cannot allow those who have caused immense harm to their victims to walk free without facing the consequences of their actions. The absolute discharge granted to Malcolm Phillips is an alarming signal, suggesting that the suffering of survivors does not merit justice.
Furthermore, it is vital to review and improve sentencing guidelines to prevent the miscarriage of justice in cases involving such grievous offenses. Judges must adhere to guidelines that reflect the severity of these crimes and the impact they have on victims' lives.
We call on the Ministry of Justice and relevant judicial bodies to immediately reconsider the discharge of Malcolm Phillips and implement improved judicial guidelines and accountability measures.
By doing so, we ensure that survivors, like Angela Redford,, Kelly Lees and, Karen Bentham, and countless others, receive the justice and recognition they deserve.
Join us in this fight by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for a more robust and responsive justice system that protects and honors the rights of victim survivors
