DEMAND JUSTICE & ACCOUNTABILITY FOR VEHICULAR NEGLIGENCE
The Issue
THE STORY:
We are seeking justice for Deanna N. Contreras, whose life was senselessly and tragically cut short on May 22, 2026, due to extreme recklessness and criminal negligence. On the night of the accident in Davenport, Florida, Deanna was in a vehicle driven by an individual who was highly intoxicated after a night of drinking with friends. The owner of the vehicle, who was seated in the front passenger seat, willingly and knowingly handed the keys to this intoxicated individual.
Within moments, the driver sped to 117 mph in a 25-mph zone, lost control on a curve, and struck an electric pole. The car flipped, and Deanna was the sole fatality. While the driver is currently facing charges of DUI manslaughter, the owner of the vehicle is facing zero legal consequences or charges. Under current law, the passenger cannot be held criminally liable for the driver’s actions, despite knowingly entrusting a deadly weapon—a motor vehicle—to an intoxicated person.
THE PROBLEM:
Current laws fail to hold vehicle owners accountable for their negligence in allowing intoxicated individuals to operate their vehicles. Camera footage and bar records clearly confirm that all parties were drinking together, making the driver’s intoxication obvious. The law must evolve to recognize that providing keys to an intoxicated driver is a direct contribution to the resulting fatality.
OUR DEMANDS:
We the undersigned demand the following changes to our legal system:
Hold Vehicle Owners Accountable: We demand that the owner of the vehicle in this tragic case be held criminally and legally responsible for their negligence in enabling the drunk driver, leading to the death of Deanna N. Contreras.
Pass New Legislation: We urge the Florida State Legislature to draft and pass a law—named in honor of Deanna N. Contreras—that establishes legal liability for anyone who knowingly provides the vehicle or keys to an intoxicated person, making them equally culpable for damages and fatalities caused by that driver.
Deanna was a daughter, sister, and friend adored by many. No one else should lose their life to such blatant negligence, and vehicle owners must face consequences for knowingly unleashing intoxicated drivers onto our streets.
