Demand Insurance Coverage for Ayurvedic Practitioners in Canada

The Issue

Ayurveda, a time-tested system of Holistic medicine with roots in India, has been practiced for thousands of years and continues to help millions worldwide achieve balance, healing, and improved quality of life.

Ayurvedic Practitioners undergo four and a half years of extensive classroom training and one year clinical training. The Ayurvedic educational curriculum has an integrated approach to the ancient
system of herbal medicine with modern medical science.

The WHO and Ayurveda research collaboration focuses on strengthening Ayurveda as evidence-based medicine, promoting its global acceptance, and developing guidelines for safe and rational use, including standardization, safety, and efficacy studies of herbal medicines.

In Canada, growing numbers of patients are turning to Ayurvedic therapies—including herbal treatments, dietary support, detox programs, and personalized wellness plans—as part of their health and wellness journeys.

Despite this growing demand and a global shift toward integrative healthcare, most insurance companies in Canada do not offer coverage for Ayurvedic treatments. This exclusion limits access to care, especially for those who cannot afford to pay out of pocket, and unfairly disadvantages individuals seeking alternative therapies.

We believe that Health Insurance should reflect the diverse needs and choices of the communities it serves. Just as Acupuncture, TCM, and Naturopathy have gained recognition in many policies, it is time Ayurvedic practice receives the same respect and coverage.
