Demand Indiana University of Pennsylvania Investigate Sex Crimes in Fraternities
The Issue
As an advocate against violence towards women (and as a male), I cannot sit idly by as more students suffer in silence. Women report being victimized at specific fraternities including, but not limited to Sigma Chi and Theta Chi at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Terrifyingly, some have come crying to me, oftentimes while being chased out of the chapter houses claiming to have either already been assaulted or have barely escaped.
It has come to my attention that some fraternity members, particularly those in Sigma Chi and Theta Chi, are using Rohypnol (roofies) - an act featured in numerous cases of sexual assaults on campuses. Every semester, dozens of victims fear for their safety and well-being as they suffer through these terrible acts committed by the brothers, often followed by threats. Additionally, bans are issued from those in the fraternity to avoid the truth from coming out.
The IUP's Interfraternity Council (IFC) is tasked with overseeing the conduct of its fraternities. However, repeated instances of sexual violence reported from within fraternities raise serious questions about IFC's effectiveness and its commitment towards student safety. Despite its responsibility, the IFC has failed to enforce strict accountability, allowing a dangerous culture to persist. Many believe the council prioritizes fraternity reputations over student protection. This negligence cannot be tolerated.
Join us in urging the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to say 'NO' to fraternity-sponsored violence. Stand up against the culture of fear. Sign this petition to help make our university a safe place for everyone, not only for present students, but for those who choose to enroll in the future.
