Demand improvements for our high school experience
The Issue
Our high school experience, which should be filled with memorable moments, excitement, and opportunities, has been significantly altered. Our principal enacted changes that are not only unfair but also negatively impact our well-being and school spirit.
Firstly, our lunch period was reduced from an hour to just 30 minutes. This change doesn’t allow students enough time to unwind, eat, and socialize properly, which is essential for maintaining mental health and focus throughout the day. Merely 30 minutes is inadequate given the size of our school and the time it takes to queue and get served. According to experts, a restful lunch break is pivotal for student performance and mental health (National Education Association).
Moreover, the food trucks that brought variety and accessibility to our lunch options were removed without consultation. These food trucks were not just a source of food but a highlight of our day, offering something to look forward to amid academic pressures.
Alongside these changes, the dress code was made more stringent, limiting our expression and comfort. A more relaxed dress code allows students to wear clothes they feel comfortable in, boosting confidence and inclusiveness at school.
Additionally, the principal has restricted or canceled our Class of 2027 activities, traditions that past classes have cherished and benefited from. Senior activities are crucial experiences that form lasting memories and promote class unity. We deserve the same opportunities as those before us, like prom planning, senior trips, and school spirit events.
We are also encountering unexpected fines, like teachers charging us to retrieve our confiscated phones, which adds an unnecessary financial burden on students and complicates communications with family.
We propose the following actionable changes:
- Restore the lunch break to one hour to enhance student well-being.
- Reintroduce food trucks to bring diversity back to our lunch options.
- Revise the dress code policy to allow more flexibility and expression.
- Reinstate senior events and activities for the Class of 2027.
- Eliminate unfair fines imposed for phone retrievals.
These changes restore fairness and improve the educational environment for us all.
Let's stand together to call for these necessary improvements for the benefit of current and future students. Sign this petition to support our cause and ensure we all have a fulfilling and fair high school experience.
