Demand improved safety measures for motorcyclists in New Mexico
La causa
On the night of December 12, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., my brother was riding his motorcycle on Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico, heading toward the Plaza. Fate took a cruel turn. Another vehicle, made a left turn directly into his path. The resulting collision was catastrophic, shattering his dreams and leaving our family in an emotional wreck.
This isn't an isolated incident. In 2023, New Mexico reported over 50 motorcycle fatalities, with many more riders suffering serious injuries, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Too often the narrative is overshadowed by the assumption of reckless riding, yet statistics reveal that in a substantial number of these collisions, other vehicle drivers are at fault, often failing to yield or not seeing the motorcyclist. It is an urgent call for reformed road safety measures to prevent such heart-wrenching tragedies from recurring.
To ensure a safer environment for all motorcyclists, we propose the implementation of advanced intersection warning systems and increased signage about motorcycle awareness in urban areas like Santa Fe. We also advocate for stricter punishment for negligent driving incidents involving motorcyclists and mandatory educational programs for all new drivers focusing on sharing the road with motorcyclists.
Furthermore, investing in public awareness campaigns that emphasize watching out for motorbikes on the road can be life-saving. By educating the public, we can change behavior and build a community where all feel safe while traveling.
Every signature on this petition is a step closer to safer roads, a transformed public mindset, and the prevention of further motorcycle-related tragedies. Help us honor my brother’s courage, and the countless stories of other riders, by demanding immediate action from our local legislators. Let's end the cycle of preventable collisions and protect our New Mexico riders. Please sign this petition today and advocate for change.
