Demand Immediate Mental Health Services and Respect for Incarcerated in CDCR Prison
Demand Immediate Mental Health Services and Respect for Incarcerated in CDCR Prison
The Issue
My husband is currently detained in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) prison, and his experience sheds light on a severe issue plaguing the system. He is part of the mental health management (MHP) program that is supposedly equipped with mental health resources. However, the realities inside the prison tell a different story, particularly at Kern Valley State Prison, where these resources are severely lacking.
Incarcerated loved ones are forced to wait three months to speak with a mental health counselor. Delays in accessing vital mental health support can exacerbate conditions, lead to despair, and even trigger potential crises. This situation is profoundly unacceptable considering the CDCR's assertion of providing adequate care as part of its mission statement.
Furthermore, there is a pressing concern with the way mental health staff conduct themselves. Reports of staff laughing or ridiculing inmates requires immediate investigation to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all. Particularly those in a position of vulnerability as they discuss their mental struggles deserve utmost respect and empathy. Adding to that, inmates are pressured into medication regimens even when they do not feel ready.
The current environment is not conducive to recovery or rehabilitation. Instead, it leaves already vulnerable individuals feeling unheard and uncared for thus failing to hold up to CDCR's mission of creating a safer California through correctional and rehabilitation strategies.
For these reasons, we urge institutional review, immediate improvement on mental health provision, diversity and sensitivity training for staff, and the implementation of supportive and rehabilitative programs without pressure for medication acceptance. These individuals deserve a voice, deserve care, and most importantly, deserve to be heard. Please sign this petition to advocate for better mental healthcare within the CDCR system.
