Demand Immediate Improvement and Increased Funding for UK Mental Health Services

The Issue

My name is Donna. I tragically lost my sister to suicide when the mental health system we trusted failed her. She reached out for help, but the support she desperately needed came too late. She became one of the countless individuals who fell through the cracks of a system that is overstretched, underfunded, and painfully slow in responding to those in crisis.

This isn’t just my story — it’s happening to families across the UK every single day. The mental health system is breaking under the weight of rising demand, leaving vulnerable people without the lifeline they need. The truth is brutal and devastating:

  • Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 20–34 in the UK.
  • In 2021, over 5,200 suicides were registered in England alone — that's 14 lives lost every single day.
  • The average waiting time for mental health treatment in the UK is over 12 weeks — and for many, that’s too long to wait.
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 4 people globally will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime, yet mental health receives only 11% of the NHS budget despite accounting for 23% of the disease burden in England.
  • A 2022 report from Mind UK revealed that 1 in 10 people had to resort to visiting A&E for mental health support because they couldn’t access timely care.

This is unacceptable. Mental health is just as important as physical health — but the resources, funding, and response times don’t reflect that reality.

I’m calling on the UK government and the NHS to take immediate, meaningful action:
✅ Guarantee a maximum 24-hour response time for all mental health crisis referrals.
✅ Increase funding for mental health services by at least 30% within the next two years.
✅ Expand the number of 24/7 mental health crisis centres across the UK.
✅ Ensure mental health support is available in schools, workplaces, and communities.

We cannot afford to lose more lives to silence and neglect. My sister’s death was preventable — and so are thousands of others every year. If mental health services had been properly resourced and responsive, she might still be here today.

No one should be left to suffer alone. No one should be left waiting for help that never comes. This crisis is costing lives — and we need to act now.
