Demand immediate action against MP Ramanathan Archchuna for misusing women and children

The Issue

We call upon the Sri Lankan authorities to take immediate and decisive action against MP Ramanathan Archchuna, a newly elected parliamentarian from Jaffna, for his repeated and alarming misuse of women and children as tools for political retaliation.

Through his personal Facebook profile, MP Archchuna has engaged in deeply disturbing and unacceptable behavior, including:

Targeting Women and Children:

Posting photos of a fellow MP’s mother, sister, and infant twin children to intimidate and harass his political opponents.

Exploiting Social Media:

During a Facebook live session, he opened a young woman’s profile, downloaded her photo, and zoomed in to display it to his followers.
In another instance, he searched a man’s profile for photos of children and expressed disappointment when none were found.

Making Vulgar Comments:

During a live session, he made obscene and degrading remarks about a female doctor, publicly describing her private life in vulgar terms while commenting on how she conceived her child.

He has even used childbirth and conception in an offensive and inappropriate manner to retaliate against others. These are just a few examples of his acts of violence against women and children.

Only few of his offences are mentioned here , and some serious offence including some sensitive informations are avoided

These actions, conducted publicly via his social media accounts, including posts tagged with the parliament's name, represent a blatant abuse of power and a violation of fundamental human rights.

Such behavior undermines the dignity and safety of women and children, sets a dangerous precedent, and tarnishes the integrity of Sri Lanka’s parliament.

We demand the following actions:

Immediate Disciplinary Measures:

Hold MP Archchuna accountable for his actions and ensure that such behavior is not tolerated in Sri Lanka’s parliament.

Stronger Legal Protections for Women and Children:

Enact new legislation to prevent harassment and abuse, including:

Establishing a confidential complaint mechanism for women to report harassment.
Prioritizing swift legal action against individuals engaging in such abuses.
Introducing regulations to penalize the misuse of social media for harassment.
Women and children deserve to live in a society free from fear, exploitation, and intimidation, especially by those entrusted with public office.

By addressing this issue decisively, Sri Lanka can safeguard human rights, uphold the dignity of its citizens, and foster a culture of accountability.

Sign this petition to demand justice and ensure a safer environment for women and children in Sri Lanka.
