Demand Immediate Action Against Killings of Tutsis in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Issue

During the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, we watched helplessly as hate led to the massacre of 1 million innocent Tutsis and moderate Hutus in just 100 days. Despite, international warnings of the planned genocide, nothing was done to save them! We, as a global community, failed them. This left an indelible mark on my life and filled me with an unshakeable commitment to ensure that this history does not repeat itself.

Today, a similar horror is unfolding once more, again against the Tutsi but now in the Democratic Republic of Congo. People are being lynched and tortured in the DRC. Despite numerous United Nations resolutions and the damning documentation of the presence of genocidal elements within its borders, the Congolese government remains complicit. Not only has there been gross negligence, there is damning evidence suggesting active support by elements within the DRC government for these terrorist militias who have been integrated in the DRC army.

Many global governments and organizations are thus far silent on this simmering crisis. However, history has already shown us the tragic cost of inaction - we lost a million lives in Rwanda in a horrifyingly short period. We cannot stand by idly once again, as an entire ethnic group is erased merely for their heritage.

We have the urgent responsibility as global citizens to stand against genocide and hate, to be the voice for those who are being silenced. There is no time to waste. Let us demand immediate and necessary intervention from the global community, in particular the United Nations, to stop the ongoing violence and provide support for the at-risk marginalized Tutsis, Banyamulenge and Hema populations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
