The Issue

Many consumers believe that purchasing "cage-free" eggs means supporting humane practices for chickens. But, this term can be misleading. It doesn't 100% guarantee enough space for chickens to roam freely, it doesn't guarantee enough food for chickens, and it certainly doesn't guarantee enough love and care. Instead, "cage-free" chickens are squeezed into distressingly cramped places, with thousands packed into a single area. This revelation is in stark contrast to what consumers are led to believe. "Cage-free" only means that they aren't kept in battery cages. But, these chickens are frequently subjected to painful beak breaking, starvation, and eventual slaughter at a young age. They are extremely overcrowded and hens are packed into sheds with little room, resulting in broken bones and feather loss. The air in the warehouses are heavy with ammonia from pollution, and these chickens never see natural light in their life.

Chickens are sentient beings, capable of expressing a range of emotions and behaviors. They need more than just freedom from cages. They require environments that allow them to dust bathe, seek privacy, and move about comfortably. These behaviors are not just luxuries but essential for their physical and psychological well-being.

According to the Humane Society, most chickens are deprived of the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors, leading to stress, injury, and illness. Studies have shown that chickens kept in overcrowded conditions not only suffer mentally but are also more susceptible to diseases, which can compromise food safety standards when it comes to the eggs they lay.

We demand that standards for "cage-free" labeling be more transparent. Companies should ensure that chickens have ample space to engage in natural behaviors, including adequate areas for dust bathing and movement. Agricultural practices must be transparent, and regulations should enforce spacious, clean, and enriching environments for all chickens.

Sign this petition to push for reforms in poultry farming standards. It's time we hold egg producers accountable and redefine what "cage-free" truly means. We should ensure that our choices align with genuine humane practices. Together, we can make a difference in the welfare of chickens and promote ethical consumption practices. Your voice can be the catalyst for this vital change. Sign and support humane treatment for chickens today.
