Demand Honest Advertising, Fairness and Transparency from Internet Service Providers
The Issue
To Whom It May Concern,
As engaged citizens of the United States, we are calling for immediate and necessary reforms in the regulation of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The internet is an indispensable tool in our daily lives, and it's essential that the services provided by ISPs are transparent, fair, and meet the evolving demands of consumers. We urge policymakers to implement the following changes:
Defining High-Speed Internet: ISPs should only use the terms "high speed" or "broadband" in marketing if they offer at least 300 Mbps download speed and 100 Mbps upload speed. This change is crucial to ensure that the term "high speed" accurately reflects the capabilities required for modern internet usage.
Transparent Speed Advertising: Require ISPs to clearly state both upload and download speeds in all marketing and advertising. This transparency is vital for consumers to make informed decisions about their internet service.
Inclusive Pricing in Advertisements: Mandate that ISPs include all taxes and fees in the advertised price of their services. Hidden fees in the fine print are misleading and unfair to consumers.
Fair Compensation for Service Interruptions: ISPs should provide a prorated credit for any day where there is an internet outage or a slowdown of 25% or more that lasts longer than 30 minutes. This policy would hold ISPs accountable for service quality and ensure fair compensation for consumers.
Prohibiting Anti-Competitive Agreements: Ban ISPs from entering non-competitive contracts with local governments that restrict competition from other providers. Such agreements limit consumer choice and often lead to higher prices and lower service quality.
Reasons for Change:
Advancements in Technology and Content: With the rapid development of online content and services, higher internet speeds have become necessary for average users.
Increase in Remote Work: More people are working from home than ever before, necessitating reliable and fast internet connections.
Need for Enhanced Security and Connectivity: Home security systems, baby monitors, and other essential devices require stable and high-speed internet connections.
International Comparisons: Many countries offer better internet speeds and services compared to what is currently available in the U.S., indicating that improvements are both necessary and feasible.
The internet is a critical resource for work, education, and personal communication. It is time that our internet service standards reflect the needs of modern American life. By signing this petition, we urge policymakers to take these steps to ensure that ISPs provide services that are fair, transparent, and meet the needs of all Americans.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
