The Issue

"I see this as an unusually high rate increase"
PSC Commissioner John Maggiore

"These rate hikes are unaffordable and outrageous under any circumstance, but especially given the ongoing widespread billing problems, the recent egregious safety failures, the poor customer service record, and the inadequate rate filing that does not uphold the state's climate law nor provide cost justifications"
—  Irene Weiser, Fossil Free Tompkins

------

NYSEG has over 1 million electric and gas customers across 40 counties who face staggering bill increases of hundreds and thousands of dollars. Significant price hikes over the past three years were unjustly approved by NYS PSC. A fourth hike was approved for May 2025.

With the recent acquisition of Avangrid (NYSEG) by Iberdrola, a foreign energy conglomerate in December 2024, NYSEG was privatized leaving transparency of pricing uncertain and. Rising rate increases for supply, effectively DOUBLED BILLS regardless of the meters in place although some question the accuracy of SMART METERS. On the whole,  customers question the integrity their billings and meter efficiency.

What is the real cause of the spike in rates? Not without precedent. NYSEG was investigated on 2022 by DPS for Billing Errors

2022: DPS Expands Investigation of NYSEG and RG&E for Billing Errors

Whether coincidental or malicious, the timing of these PRICE HIKES in conjunction with the rollout of SMART METERS and PRIVATIZATION OF NYSEG warrants a thorough investigation to safeguard consumer rights.

That's why we're calling upon Governor Kathy Hochul to launch an official examination of NYSEG's pricing practices. It's essential to determine whether we're victims of an unjustified price-gouging strategy or innocent casualties of change, left to bear the brunt of the cost by parent company Iberdrola to fund their ambitious international energy developments.

We're united in our call for fairness and transparency. Together, let's make sure that we're not paying a penny more than what's reasonable and just. By signing this petition, you'll help us take a stand against suspected price manipulation and demand accountability from NYSEG.

Please sign today and ask Governor Hochul to take action.
