Demand GKN Aerospace Be Removed from OC Neighborhoods After the Toxic Chemical Spill

Demand GKN Aerospace Be Removed from OC Neighborhoods After the Toxic Chemical Spill

The Issue

A facility storing 7,000 gallons of highly flammable toxic chemicals sits in the middle of a residential and commercial neighborhood in Garden Grove. Last week, the entire region found out what that means.

When a tank at GKN Aerospace began to fail, Orange County Fire Authority officials warned the public of two possible outcomes: a massive toxic spill or a catastrophic explosion. For five days, 50,000 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders. Schools closed. Shelters overflowed. Families had nowhere to go. The worst case scenario was narrowly avoided — this time.

This should never have been possible. GKN Aerospace is not a remote industrial facility. It is surrounded by homes, schools, businesses, and families. A facility storing thousands of gallons of volatile toxic chemicals has no business operating in a dense urban neighborhood. The 2024 settlement GKN paid to California air quality regulators for toxic emissions at this same site was a warning sign that went unheeded.

Orange County residents should not have to live one tank crack away from disaster.

Sign this petition to demand Orange County and California officials require GKN Aerospace to relocate away from residential and commercial areas and establish strict safety buffer zones for facilities storing hazardous chemicals.
