Demand for Universities to refund application fees to rejected students! Broken system

Demand for Universities to refund application fees to rejected students! Broken system
The Issue
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the practice of universities charging non-refundable application fees and failing to refund them to rejected students. This practice is exploitative, unfair, and a clear misuse of financial resources, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Background:
Universities across the country charge application fees, claiming it is necessary to cover administrative costs. However, many students are rejected without any accountability or transparency regarding the use of these fees. The system profits from the hopes and aspirations of young people who often struggle financially to afford these applications. The non-refundable nature of these fees turns the education system into a profit-making scheme, exploiting vulnerable students and families.
Impact:
Financial Burden: Students from low-income families often save or borrow money to apply, only to lose it without any return.
Inequity: This system disproportionately affects marginalized communities and deepens inequality.
Lack of Accountability: Universities provide no clear justification for why rejected applicants should not be refunded when they do not benefit from the services.
Request/Call to Action:
We demand that all universities:
Refund application fees to students who are not offered admission.
Implement a more transparent and fair application process that does not profit from rejected applicants.
Develop policies to reduce or waive application fees for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Charging non-refundable fees to rejected students is unethical and perpetuates a broken system. We call upon universities, regulatory bodies, and policymakers to take immediate action to end this exploitative practice. Education should empower, not profit from, the dreams of students.
