The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, educators, and concerned citizens, respectfully urge the Patchogue-Medford School District to implement a policy requiring a trained school bus aide to be present on all school buses transporting students to and from school.

The Problem

Every school day, our children board buses where one adult — the driver — is expected to safely operate a large vehicle while also being solely responsible for managing the behavior of up to 50, if not more, students. This is an unrealistic and unsafe expectation.

No professional should be required to divide their attention between driving and discipline, especially under conditions that demand full focus on the road to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

Without adequate adult supervision, school buses become unsupervised and unmonitored spaces where inappropriate and harmful behaviors can and do occur. These include:

 • Bullying: Verbal, emotional, and even physical harassment between students often goes unchecked in the absence of adult intervention.

 • Physical altercations: Fighting between students is more likely to escalate without immediate supervision or de-escalation.

 • Sexual harassment or assault: In rare but deeply concerning instances, the lack of oversight allows for inappropriate or abusive behavior that can traumatize victims and go unnoticed until significant damage is done.

 • Disruptive behavior: Standing, shouting, throwing objects, and other unsafe actions can distract the driver and increase the risk of accidents.

 • Emotional distress: Vulnerable students, including those with disabilities or special needs, may experience anxiety, fear, or isolation in an unmanaged bus environment.

The Solution

The presence of a trained bus aide — someone whose sole responsibility is to monitor student behavior, ensure safety, and assist the driver when needed — significantly reduces the risk of all these issues. Bus aides can:

 • Intervene in and de-escalate conflicts before they become serious.

 • Provide emotional support to students who feel unsafe.

 • Document and report incidents accurately and immediately.

 • Help students with special needs navigate the bus ride with dignity and care.

This simple addition to the transportation system can make a profound difference in student safety and driver effectiveness.

Our Request

We urge the Patchogue-Medford School District to:

 1. Require a bus aide on all school buses transporting students.

 2. Ensure aides receive training in student behavior management, conflict resolution, and mandated reporting.

 3. Provide adequate funding and logistical planning to support this essential safety measure.

The school bus is an extension of the school environment. Our children deserve the same level of safety and supervision there as they do in classrooms, hallways, and cafeterias. The cost of inaction is too high — and the solution is within reach.
