Demand for Reinstatement of the Original Maratha Empire Map in NCERT Class 8 Textbooks

Demand for Reinstatement of the Original Maratha Empire Map in NCERT Class 8 Textbooks
The Issue
As someone deeply invested in the accurate portrayal of history in our education system, I am concerned by the decision of the NCERT to remove the Maratha Empire map from Class 8 textbooks. This risks giving students an incomplete understanding of our rich historical heritage.
The reasoning provided—that certain regions were not under "direct" Maratha rule—oversimplifies the complex nature of historical empires. Under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later rulers, the Maratha Empire functioned through a sophisticated system of sovereignty that included direct administration, systems of tribute (such as Chauth), and broad political influence. In the 18th-century context, paying tribute was a clear acknowledgment of the Empire's supremacy.
Removing the map entirely limits students’ ability to visualize and appreciate the true geographical reach of the Maratha Empire. We believe that the map, as originally depicted with its full extent, is essential for students to understand how the Marathas became the dominant power in the Indian subcontinent.
We propose reinstating the original map to reflect the unified political influence of the Maratha Confederacy. Historical evidence from the Peshwa Daftar, the 1752 Ahamadi Treaty, and even British-era records confirm that these regions were under Maratha authority. Using a single, clear representation helps students grasp the actual scale of the Empire without unnecessary confusion.
Publishing textbooks that reflect the true complexity of history is essential for building informed and thoughtful learners. Educational content should aim to deepen understanding, not reduce it through oversimplification.
We respectfully urge NCERT and relevant authorities to reconsider the decision to withhold this map and to reintroduce the Maratha Empire map to ensure a balanced and realistic depiction of our history.
Please sign this petition to support the restoration of the Maratha Empire map in our educational resources.
