Demand for Red Cross to Visit and Protect Israeli Hostages

The Issue

We are deeply concerned about the safety and health of Israeli hostages, including adults, children, and the elderly. Their well-being is personal to me and many others who share this concern. It is a fundamental human right to have access to medical care and humanitarian aid in times of crisis. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has a mandate under international law to visit prisoners during conflicts, yet they are denied access to Israeli hostages.

According to Amnesty International, denying detainees access to humanitarian organizations like the ICRC can lead them vulnerable to human rights abuses such as torture or ill-treatment (Amnesty International Report 2017/18). In addition, according to World Health Organization reports, prolonged captivity can have severe physical and psychological effects on detainees.

We urge relevant authorities and international bodies involved in this matter - ensure that the Red Cross gets unrestricted access for regular visits with these hostages. This will not only uphold their basic human rights but also provide much-needed medical attention and psychological support.

Immediate access to hostages is essential for the following reasons:

  1. Verification of Conditions: The ICRC can assess the conditions of detention and ensure that detainees are not subjected to any form of ill-treatment or abuse.
    2. Family Communication: The ICRC facilitates communication between detainees and their families, which is a fundamental right under international law and a crucial aspect of preserving the dignity of those detained.
    3. Medical Care: Monitoring the detainees' access to medical care is essential, and the ICRC can help ensure they receive necessary healthcare when required.
    4. Transparency and Accountability: Granting access to the ICRC promotes transparency and accountability, which is vital for maintaining trust and confidence in the treatment of detainees.
  2. We believe that upholding the principles of humanity, even in the most challenging circumstances, is a moral and legal obligation. Allowing the ICRC access to hostages is not only a matter of compassion but also an opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to peace, human rights, and the rule of law.
