The Issue

The low-water bridge on Highway CC crossing the Little Pomme de Terre River has become a recurring and unacceptable hazard for our community. Over the past several years, this crossing has compromised the safety of countless motorists and has tragically claimed lives, including a recent fatality on June 14, 2026, when an occupant inside the vehicle became trapped in the floodwaters and drowned. Over the last five years, we have personally participated in water rescue efforts at this crossing and have witnessed firsthand the extreme danger it presents during periods of heavy rainfall. The reality that another preventable tragedy could occur at any time weighs heavily on those who live nearby and respond when disaster strikes. This hazardous crossing serves as a vital route for many local residents, including families, workers, emergency personnel, and school transportation. For those familiar with the area, the sound of sirens near the bridge has become far too common—a distressing reminder of another emergency that may have been prevented with proper infrastructure improvements. Survivors have shared stories of vehicles becoming stranded, water rising rapidly, and terrifying moments spent fighting for their lives. According to local reports and emergency response records, this crossing has been the site of numerous accidents, rescues, and near-miss incidents. These are not merely statistics; they represent our neighbors, friends, children, parents, and loved ones who are placed at risk every time floodwaters cover the roadway. Despite years of concern voiced by residents, a permanent solution has yet to be implemented. The solution is both practical and necessary: replacing the low-water crossing with an elevated bridge designed to remain passable during high-water events. Such a project would significantly reduce the risk of injury and loss of life while providing reliable transportation access for the surrounding community. Federal funding opportunities already exist to support projects of this nature. Under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), hazardous low-water crossings may qualify for substantial federal assistance through programs such as the Federal Highway Administration’s Bridge Formula Program and other infrastructure grant opportunities. We respectfully call upon MoDOT, Greene County officials, state representatives, and federal transportation partners to take immediate action to evaluate, fund, and construct an elevated bridge at the Highway CC crossing over the Little Pomme de Terre River. The cost of inaction is measured not only in dollars but in human lives. Our community has endured enough close calls. We cannot wait for another tragedy before meaningful action is taken. By signing this petition, you join us in demanding a safer future for everyone who travels Highway CC. Community safety must be a priority.
