Demand Florida to Allow Transgender Individuals to Update Driver's License Gender

Demand Florida to Allow Transgender Individuals to Update Driver's License Gender
The Issue
As someone with many close friends in the transgender community, I am incredibly concerned about a recent law change in Florida. This new law prevents transgender individuals from changing the sex on their driver's licenses to reflect their gender identity. This law not only invalidates their gender identities but also exposes them to discrimination and harassment. Transgender individuals in Florida should have the right to change their license to reflect their correct gender, not their assigned sex.
According to a 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, nearly one-third of transgender individuals who showed an ID with a name or gender that did not match their perceived gender reported negative experiences such as being harassed, denied services, or attacked. This statistic strongly supports the need for proper identification that reflects an individual's gender identity.
Florida should join the 20 states and Washington D.C., which according to National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), already allow changes in sex designation on driver’s licenses without proof of surgery.
We urge Florida lawmakers to reconsider this decision and support the rights and dignity of all its residents regardless of what their gender identity is. It is time for Florida law enforcement and legislators alike to recognize that everyone deserves to be respected, to be safe, and to receive fair treatment under the Florida law.
Please add your name to this petition asking Florida lawmakers to rescind this law!
