Demand Flicker-Safe Smartphone Displays as an Accessibility Requirement

Il problema

Modern smartphones rely heavily on display technologies that flicker or change color very rapidly to manage brightness and color.

These technologies include pulse-width modulation (PWM), temporal dithering, and other rapid color changes that you'll likely never notice unless your eyes are sensitive.

But the truth is different. For many people, these technologies aren't harmless and free of side effects. Flickering and rapid display changes can cause problems ranging from mild to very serious: eye strain, headaches, migraines, nausea, or simply discomfort.

Some people can't use these smartphones at all.

We're not talking about a preference for one type of screen over another.

We're talking about accessibility and health issues. People with migraines, photosensitivity, LASIK surgery, dry eye, neurodivergent users: we're all at risk.

Manufacturers often cite solutions like high-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) or "DC-type dimming" but in reality, these solutions rarely help those experiencing symptoms.

And let's not forget children. For many reasons (which we won't discuss here), children often spend a lot of time in front of phones and tablets. We still don't know the effects of years of exposure to displays that support these technologies on vision development. But should we really not be concerned?

Stable, flicker-free screens should be a luxury; they're a responsible choice.

Right now, if you're looking for a smartphone with a truly stable display (like a classic IPS display), you won't find anything in the mid- to high-end range, even though we now depend on smartphones for everything in our daily lives, from work to banking to healthcare.

This isn't to say that companies should ban their "more advanced" screens from the market; let's be realistic. What we'd like to see is real standards for visual comfort, and for AT LEAST one phone per line to meet them:

  • PWM-free IPS LCD display
  • No harmful flickering or color manipulation (dithering or temporal modulation)
  • Transparent information about how brightness is controlled
  • Treat visual comfort as an accessibility requirement, not a quirky preference.

Smartphones shouldn't make you feel bad just because you have to use them.

People need options, to be able to choose. Accessibility is important.

Visual comfort isn't optional.

We are real users, with real experiences, demanding change.
