Demand firing of Ron “RapeJokes” MacLean from sports broadcast NHL
The Issue
Rape and rape culture have no place in Canada, hockey, or anywhere. It is time we take a stand against those who make light of such a serious and heinous issue. Recently, on a live sports broadcast, Ron MacLean made an insensitive and extremely inappropriate joke, stating “Roofies will get you every time." Roofies, or Rohypnol, is a drug that has been notoriously associated with sexual assault, and to hear it mentioned in jest during a sporting event is unacceptable.
As a society, we expect sports figures and commentators to set a positive example, not perpetuate harmful stereotypes and jokes that trivialize the severity of sexual violence. According to the Canadian Women's Foundation, up to half of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. In this context, making jokes about substances often used in these crimes is not just in poor taste—it is dangerous and contributes to a culture where such behavior is normalized.
Ron MacLean is a prominent figure in Canadian hockey and has a platform that reaches millions of viewers. It's imperative that we hold those in such positions accountable for their words and actions. Continued employment of someone who makes such crude jokes sends a message that sports media is indifferent to the serious issue of sexual violence.
Concrete action is needed to show that we, as viewers and as a community, will not stand for this. We call on the network and sports organizations involved to take immediate action by removing Ron MacLean from their broadcasts. This step will send a strong message that there are consequences for endorsing or joking about rape culture.
We demand better from our broadcasters and our sports icons. Let us show empathy and strength by providing a safer and respectful viewing experience for all. Please join me in signing this petition to remove Ron MacLean from sports broadcast, and call for a shift towards more responsible and respectful sports commentary in Canada.
