Demand Financial Support for Disabled Individuals with a Partner rather then ignoring them

The Issue

In many ways, we experience challenges a lot differently than most people due to being disabled. Unable to work and often relegated to living at home, our financial life can become a merciless battleground. We rely on benefits which we have tirelessly acquired; benefits that serve as a lifeline, providing us not just a respite, but the means to survive. Unfortunately, the current policies overlook a significant dilemma; when a disabled person wishes to live with a partner who in turn is their unpaid carer, they face severe deductions in their benefits, significantly affecting their quality of life.

These policies push individuals into a lonely corner, imposing the message that finding love or companionship implies giving up on crucial financial assistance. The rules currently state that if a disabled person has a partner, then the partner must bear the financial responsibilities of both — all while also serving as the primary caregiver. This policy not only discourages the cultivation of essential human relationships but imposes an unfair and substantial burden on the partner. It encouraged those disabled to not just over rely on their partner, but makes them extremely vulnerable to financial abuse, unable to leave their partner due to the reliance and more.

Today, we voice this concern not merely as individuals but as members of a society that values inclusivity. Representing numerous lives, this call is for the reconsideration of unjust policies that disadvantage the disabled who wish to live with their partners.

did you know those with disabilities are not allowed more then 6k in savings/current account EVER. If they do they are sanctioned. I don't know a single house or deposit that is under 6k? do you? would you be able to live, rent, buy a house, expenditures and more with only 6k to your name? not to mention on average being disabled costs over 1k a month more then the average person. do you think you should be punished for further penny pinching, even though the benefits given to most is less then minimum wage to begin with, or they should be encouraged?

If you manage to befriend someone, who can afford a house if they sublet to you, the government may help with housing costs. But, if a partner, in a one income house hold, needs to do the same and have some financial input by their partner (e.g. renting a room to them), the government doesn't just Not help, but sanctions the disabled persons benefits at the same time.

Please stand with us in urging the government to amend these regulations, which contribute to an unfair lifestyle for disabled individuals. Every signature brings us one step closer to ensuring that love and companionship are not penalties but a cherished part of life for us all. Please help us change this system.
