Demand FIFA rescind Trump's peace prize

The Issue

Peace awards should represent genuine contributions to diplomacy, stability, and the protection of human life. When an organization creates an award intended to recognize leadership in advancing peace, the credibility of that award depends on whether the recipient’s actions align with the values the award claims to represent.

On December 5, 2025, FIFA awarded Donald J. Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World, stating that the award recognizes individuals who contribute meaningfully to unity and global peace through leadership and influence. FIFA positioned the award as a symbol of the belief that global leaders have a responsibility to reduce conflict and promote stability.

However, since February 28, 2026, the world has witnessed a major escalation of conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The humanitarian impact has been significant, raising serious concerns about whether the spirit of a peace prize is consistent with current global events.

According to international reporting and humanitarian organizations:

More than 1,300 people have been killed and over 9,000 injured in Iran since the escalation began in late February 2026. These figures were reported by international health authorities monitoring the situation.

The United Nations refugee agency estimates that between 600,000 and 1 million households in Iran have been displaced, representing as many as 3.2 million people forced from their homes as a result of airstrikes and ongoing military operations.

The conflict has also impacted civilian populations outside Iran. Iranian missile attacks have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries in Israel and the West Bank, demonstrating the widening regional effects of the conflict.

Humanitarian organizations have documented damage to civilian infrastructure including residential neighborhoods, transportation routes, and medical facilities, complicating access to care for injured civilians and increasing the long-term humanitarian burden of the conflict.

Global economic stability has also been affected. The conflict has contributed to rising oil prices exceeding $110 per barrel, increasing costs for consumers worldwide and contributing to broader economic uncertainty.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route responsible for roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply, has been identified as an area of concern due to increased military tensions in the region. Disruption to this shipping corridor could significantly impact global energy markets and economic stability.

Peace awards carry symbolic importance. They signal to the global community what values are worth recognizing and encouraging. Awards intended to honor peace should reflect measurable progress toward stability, diplomacy, and the protection of civilian life.

When conflicts result in thousands of casualties, widespread displacement, regional instability, and global economic disruption, it is reasonable for the public to evaluate whether a peace award remains consistent with its intended meaning.

Accountability helps maintain trust in global institutions. Ensuring that peace awards reflect genuine contributions toward reducing conflict helps preserve the integrity of those honors and reinforces the importance of diplomatic solutions over military escalation.

We respectfully call on FIFA to reconsider the awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize to Donald J. Trump in light of the humanitarian consequences associated with the 2026 Iran conflict.

Rescinding the award would demonstrate that peace is defined by real-world outcomes, not messaging alone. It would reinforce the principle that global recognition for peace should be reserved for leaders whose actions clearly contribute to reducing violence, protecting civilians, and promoting diplomatic resolution of conflict.

Peace is more than symbolism. Peace is measured in lives preserved, communities protected, and conflicts prevented.

If peace awards are to maintain credibility, they must remain grounded in accountability.

We urge FIFA to uphold the integrity of its Peace Prize and ensure that the honor reflects meaningful progress toward global peace.

Please sign this petition to support accountability and reaffirm the principle that peace must be demonstrated through actions, not words.
