The Issue

My electric bills have skyrocketed, costing me thousands of dollars each month, a burden that's unimaginable elsewhere in the United States. This financial strain is unsustainable, and what makes it even more frustrating is the realization that a significant portion of these expenses comes from excessive delivery charges, rather than the electricity I actually use.

Central Hudson Gas and Electric has been increasing rates, placing an unfair burden on families and individuals who are already struggling to keep up with the high cost of living. Currently, customers are paying more for the delivery of electricity than the electricity itself. This is not only unreasonable but also puts an undue strain on consumers during a time when every penny counts.

The excessive charges particularly harm low-income and middle-class households, forcing many to choose between essential needs such as food, medication, or paying their electric bills. In some cases, people are falling behind on payments, risking disconnection, and facing additional financial penalties that only worsen their predicament.

According to the New York Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities in New York, delivery rates are often adjusted to ensure utility companies can maintain and enhance service reliability. However, this should not come at the expense of disproportionately high prices for consumers. Instead, these adjustments should be fair, transparent, and balanced against consumers’ energy consumption rather than increasing costs exponentially.

The time has come for Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company to reassess their pricing structure. We urge Central Hudson and the New York Public Service Commission to:
1. Review and reduce the delivery charges applied to consumers' bills.
2. Ensure pricing transparency so consumers can understand what they are being charged.
3. Instigate a cap on rate increases, ensuring they align with inflation, not exceed it.
4. Provide relief measures, like payment plans, for those who've been disproportionately impacted by these excessive charges.

We need a compassionate approach that considers the financial challenges facing consumers today. Join me in urging Central Hudson Gas and Electric to adopt a fairer pricing strategy that reflects a balance between maintaining infrastructure and protecting consumer interests.

Sign this petition to demand that Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company implement these much-needed changes, ensuring affordable access to electricity for all. Together, we can hold them accountable and work towards a more equitable and just utility pricing system. Every signature counts and together, we can make a difference.
