Demand Fair Pricing and Honest Packaging from Coles and Woolworths Supermarkets

Demand Fair Pricing and Honest Packaging from Coles and Woolworths Supermarkets
The issue
I am an Australian citizen living on a low income, struggling to afford dinner more than three nights a week due to the escalating costs of food and groceries. This is not just my story, but the reality for many across Australia who are grappling with the same hardships. We call upon Coles and Woolworths supermarkets to offer fairer prices in response to our current economic crisis.
The size of food products has been decreasing while their prices have been increasing, making it even harder for people like me who are already struggling financially. It's unjust that we should bear the burden of increased profit margins while we can barely afford basic necessities.
According to a report by The Guardian in 2020, Australians spend an average of 16% of their household income on food - one of the highest proportions globally (The Guardian). This percentage is even higher for those on low incomes. It's time that Coles and Woolworths take responsibility as leading supermarkets in Australia by offering fair pricing and honest packaging.
In 2023, Coles announced that stock loss and theft had increased 20% from 2022. These figures are clear indicators that Australians are struggling with the increased costs of living, and the inability to afford food due to greedy supermarket giants who are cashing in during a national and global cost of living crisis.
In 2023 Woolworths and Coles profit margins skyrocketed to 1.72 billion dollars and 1.1 billion for the financial year respectively. All the while, food items have been decreasing in size and quality, but increasing in price, with many Australians having to choose between basic necessities in order to feed their families.
There's no clearer way to say it: Australian people who are dependent on supermarkets for our food and are limited for choice, are being targeted financially in the midst of an economic crisis by these supermarket giants.
We urge these corporations not only to consider their bottom line but also the welfare of their customers who depend on them for daily sustenance. Let us come together as concerned citizens demanding fairness from these retail giants. Please sign this petition if you believe in better pay for our farmers and affordable access to food for all Australians.
**BOYCOTT COLES AND WOOLWORTHS UNTIL THEY GIVE US FAIR PRICES AND A FAIR GO. IT'S TIME TO FIGHT BACK AND BE HEARD.
