Demand fair, livable pay for hourly restaurant workers
The Issue
Having worked in the restaurant industry myself, I know firsthand the struggles that hourly restaurant workers face. We sacrifice so much of our time, energy, and well-being to ensure that others are fed and satisfied, yet many of us struggle to feed our own families.
Having worked in the restaurant industry for a significant portion of my life, I know firsthand the struggles that hourly restaurant workers face. We sacrifice so much of our time, energy, and well-being to ensure that others are fed and satisfied, yet many of us struggle to feed our own families.
According to a 2026 national study titled "Underserved: The Financial Reality of America's Hourly Restaurant Workers," conducted by Instant Financial and the Center for Generational Kinetics, involving 750 hourly restaurant employees:
- 61% skipped more than one meal a week in the past month because they couldn't afford food
- 75% live paycheck to paycheck, rising to 83% among non-management workers
- 97% report some degree of financial stress, with 63% saying they feel constantly or frequently stressed
- 53% say company leadership doesn't understand what it means to live paycheck to paycheck
- Nearly 80% have had to rely on payday loans, credit card advances, or overdrafts just to get by
This isn't a story about a few struggling workers. It's a workforce-wide emergency, happening inside an industry built on serving other people's basic needs.
Hourly restaurant employees contribute enormously to the success of the hospitality industry, yet they often receive compensation that doesn't reflect their hard work and dedication. This isn't just unfair — it's unjust. These workers deserve to earn a living wage that lets them support themselves and their families without resorting to multiple jobs, payday loans, or public assistance.
We're calling on restaurant owners, operators, and industry leaders to commit to:
1. A living wage floor for all hourly staff, reviewed annually against local cost of living
2. On-demand access to earned wages and tips, so workers aren't forced into payday loans or overdrafts while waiting on a pay cycle
3. Transparent, published pay structures, so staff know how their pay compares role-to-role and industry-wide
4. Regular check-ins with staff on financial stress and scheduling stability
5. A public commitment and timeline for closing the gap between what workers earn and what it actually costs to live
By signing this petition, you're standing with hourly restaurant workers and demanding immediate changes that compensate them fairly, respect their sacrifices, and let them live with dignity.
Let's build a fair and livable future for every hourly restaurant worker. Please sign today.
