Our family, like a growing number of Irish households, has embraced the inevitable global shift towards cleaner energy by using electric vehicles (EVs). However, while we personally aim to lessen our carbon footprint and transition towards sustainability, we are facing an undue financial burden. A common, modest petrol vehicle cost us around 300 euros to insure, whereas a clean energy, modest Tesla costs us a staggering 1200 euros, while both of the car holds same value.

This discrepancy is not only unfair but also goes against the Irish government's push towards greener and more sustainable technology. If the Government truly wants to reduce carbon emissions, it makes sense to ensure that all facets of owning an EV, including insurance, are reasonably priced.

Unfortunately, despite the Government's advocacy for EV adoption and our personal endeavour to be more eco-friendly, the cost of insuring an electric car in Ireland is effectively barring a significant portion of the population from making this sustainable shift.

We urge the Irish Government, Insurance Regulators, and Insurance Companies to reevaluate these rates. We call for a more balanced insurance pricing system that truly facilitates and encourages the adoption of electric vehicles in Ireland. Not only will this foster a greater shift towards cleaner, renewable energy, but it will also underscore Ireland's commitment to sustainable practices.
