The Issue

Yesterday, I witnessed something that I never thought I would see happen in my own community in South Jersey. My daughter's teammates were denied the opportunity to play soccer on the township teams they have worked hard to be part of for the past six years. Meanwhile, the boys in the South Jersey Soccer League were given the chance to continue playing as usual. This glaring inequality is not just disheartening; it is unacceptable.

The South Jersey Girls Soccer League (SLGSL) must give girls the same playing opportunities that the boys enjoy in the South Jersey Soccer League. Soccer is not just a game; it is an empowering experience that teaches teamwork, resilience, and community. Denying the girls’ teams to have dual carding, while the boys can is unacceptable.

According to a study by the Women's Sports Foundation, girls drop out of sports at twice the rate of boys by the age of 14. This is often due to lack of opportunities. Ensuring equal playing fields can increase girls’ participation in sports, which is crucial for their physical, emotional, and social development. This is also a strong message that everyone, regardless of gender, is valued equally.

We are calling on the SLGSL to take immediate action to address this issue. Firstly, we request the implementation of policies that ensure equal access an allow dual carding, so the girls can play for their township teams as well as a club team, just as the boys teams are allowed. Secondly, we urge the league to regularly review these policies with input from coaches, parents, and community members to make improvements as necessary, especially as new developments and evolution  of soccer unfolds and leagues such as N1  emerge. Finally, we expect transparency in decisions that affect our daughters' ability to play.

Let's stand together to bring equality to the field. Sign this petition to demand that our girls receive the same soccer opportunities in the South Jersey Girls Soccer League as boys do. Together, we can make a change and ensure our daughters get the chance to shine on and off the field.
