The Egyptian government is currently charging each person who wishes to leave Gaza a staggering $5,000 USD. With an estimated population of 1.5 million Gazans, these amounts to an exorbitant sum that most cannot afford, especially since Israel has destroyed their businesses, livelihoods and looted their homes and wealth.

This practice of extortion may contravene international law, specifically Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states that "Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution." In addition, it could potentially violate Article 28 of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees which asserts that refugees should not be subject to penalties due to their illegal entry or presence in a country if they present themselves without delay.

We urge Egyptian officials on humanitarian grounds to either reduce this exit fee or waive it completely. This would alleviate some pressure on those seeking refuge from Gaza's dire situation and uphold Egypt's commitment as a signatory state under international law.

We are working together with activists based in Egypt who will present our petition to the Egyptian government.

The world is watching how Egypt responds during this crisis. It is not just about financial transactions but also about humanity and compassion towards fellow human beings caught up in beyond their control.

Please join us in urging Egypt's government for immediate action by signing this petition today and share it widely!
