Demand DMU Reinvest in Students and Redundant Staff

Demand DMU Reinvest in Students and Redundant Staff
The Issue
Having been a student at De Montfort University (DMU) for five years, I've witnessed firsthand the erosion of support, resources, and facilities integral to our education. The entire Computing Engineering & Media faculty has been whittled down to a scant few staff members, severely impacting the quality of education. Meanwhile, executives and the chancellor continue to divert resources towards foreign institutions and engage in financially irresponsible decisions that do not benefit the student body or the dedicated staff.
In May 2025, DMU announced the redundancy of over 400 staff members, a shocking move that put the quality of education at further risk. While these critical positions were being eliminated, financial reports revealed that substantial sums were still being allocated to non-essential expenses, including international ventures that don't have a direct impact on campus education.
The core mission of De Montfort University should be to provide high-quality education and support to its students. However, this priority has been overshadowed by financial choices that overlook the immediate needs of the academic community in Leicester. Students and former staff members deserve more; they deserve an institution that values their contributions and invests in their futures.
It's vital to redirect funds towards rebuilding supportive educational infrastructures and rehiring the valuable staff members who have been cast aside. This change will not only enhance the learning environment but also reaffirm DMU's commitment to its primary purpose—educating its students.
Join me in urging De Montfort University to reconsider its financial priorities. By signing this petition, you support a future where DMU's resources are used to enhance the educational experience and restore the livelihoods of the dedicated faculty members who have been unjustly let go. Please sign and share this petition to help bring necessary change to our community in Leicester.
