The Issue

Sexual assault

As a learner in a South African(Curtis Nkondo) school, I no longer feel comfortable around male teachers who believe they have the right to assault us. This deeply personal issue affects not only me but countless other students across the country. We come to schools to learn, to grow, and to feel safe, but the presence of predatory educators shatters this safe haven. The school principal must stop covering up the crimes that these teachers

The statistics are alarming. Reports have shown that over 3,600 cases of sexual assault in schools were recorded last year alone. These numbers are likely underreported as many students are too scared or ashamed to come forward. This behaviour from educators, who are supposed to be our mentors and protectors, is simply unacceptable and needs immediate action.

We are calling on the Department of Basic Education to take decisive steps in ensuring our safety. These steps include the immediate termination of any teachers found guilty of sexual misconduct or harassment, a thorough investigation into any allegations, and the establishment of a clear and effective reporting system for students to safely report incidents of abuse.

Furthermore, schools must implement intensive training programs focused on sensitizing teachers about proper conduct and ensuring they understand the boundaries. Predators use their power and status to intimidate young students into silence, so there should be strict background checks during the hiring process to prevent such individuals from exploiting their positions of authority.

Safe and supportive learning environments are essential for students to succeed. Eradicating predatory behaviour by educators is crucial for restoring trust and ensuring our schools remain spaces where education is prioritized, not fear.

Please sign this petition to send a strong message that we will not tolerate abuse in our schools. Our voices can trigger change and bring safety back to our classrooms. Together, let’s protect our future and demand accountability from those entrusted with our education.
