Demand DA Stacey Eads Remove the Israeli Flag from Humboldt County Courthouse

The Issue

I am a resident of Humboldt County and deeply disturbed by the ongoing conflict in Gaza where countless lives are being lost. It is heartbreaking to see that our tax dollars and American weapons are contributing to this conflict. To see the flag of Israel displayed at our local courthouse is a painful reminder of this reality and brings up serious issues of bias in our criminal justice system.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a contentious issue for decades, with numerous human rights violations reported. According to Human Rights Watch, Israel's treatment of Palestinians amounts to apartheid and persecution – serious crimes under international law (source: HRW report 2021). Additionally, on January 26, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), agreed to review South Africa's Petition that the State of Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and issued provisional measures to prevent such occurrence. While it is important that we respect all nations and their symbols, it becomes problematic when such symbols represent ongoing conflicts involving human rights abuses funded by our own taxpayers' money.

We believe that public institutions like courthouses should remain neutral spaces, free from political statements or affiliations. The presence of the Israeli flag in Humboldt County Courthouse sends an explicit message about where our county stands on this complex international issue.

We urge District Attorney Stacy Eads to remove the flag of Israel from display at Humboldt County Courthouse immediately. This action will not solve the crisis overseas but will show solidarity with those who believe in peace and justice for all people regardless of nationality or religion.

Please sign this petition if you agree that our local courthouse should be a place representing justice for all without any political bias or implication.
