Millions of Americans have stopped trusting the mainstream media and now get their news from independent journalists, podcasters and political influencers. But that new media ecosystem is facing its own crisis of trust. People are watching influencers suddenly reverse positions they've held for years, push narratives that benefit foreign governments, and attack anyone who questions them. The result? The internet is now flooded with accusations that political influencers are secretly being paid by foreign interests. Maybe some of those accusations are true. Maybe some aren't.

That's exactly why we need transparency. If you're being paid, directed, or financially backed by a foreign government or its agents while influencing American politics, the American people deserve to know. America First means American political discourse should never be secretly bought by foreign interests. Congress is already considering reforms aimed at strengthening foreign-influence transparency. The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) already requires certain people acting on behalf of foreign principals to register and disclose those relationships but the law was written long before influencers, podcasts and social media became major sources of political information.

It's time to bring FARA into the influencer era.
