I shouldn’t have to fear for my life simply because I’m a woman. I shouldn’t have to fear being murdered for saying no, for leaving a relationship, or for existing in public. Yet, this fear is a chilling reality for many women in Colorado and across the United States. It's time for Colorado to recognize femicide as a distinct and pressing crime that needs immediate attention.

Femicide, the gender-based killing of women, is a grave issue that affects countless families and communities. However, its recognition in the legal system remains inadequate, leaving patterns of violence against women unchecked and unaddressed. In 2020 alone, the United States saw a significant increase in intimate partner violence cases, with studies indicating a staggering number of these incidents turning lethal.

Colorado must lead the way by classifying femicide as a standalone crime. In countries like Mexico and Argentina, where femicide is recognized, they have seen an engaged society and government actively working to decrease violence against women. They have implemented specialized police units, provided resources for victims, and increased public awareness campaigns. Colorado can learn from these models by allocating resources specifically to combat femicide, fostering collaborations between law enforcement, social services, and women's advocacy groups.

By naming and tracking femicide, we can create accountability and ensure that these heinous acts are not dismissed or misclassified. It’s crucial to educate our communities and legal systems about the unique danger women face simply for being women. To effectively tackle this issue, we must start by recognizing and naming it.
