The Issue

Diani Beach, a pristine coastal region in Kenya, is currently facing an environmental crisis due to excessive and indiscriminate tree cutting along the Colobridge–Beach Road corridor. This activity is not only destroying the local ecosystem but is also threatening the natural beauty that attracts tourists from all over the world. If immediate action is not taken, this will lead to irreversible damage to the local environment and economy.

A significant number of trees have been chopped down under the guise of line clearance activities, without consideration for biodiversity conservation or eco-friendly alternatives. These trees, which have taken decades to mature, play a vital role in supporting wildlife, maintaining microclimates, and preventing soil erosion. The lack of a regulated and environmentally compliant approach to line clearance is resulting in habitat loss for many native species, including some endangered ones.

Statistics from the Kenya Forest Service indicate that deforestation in Kenya contributes to the loss of approximately 70,000 hectares of forest each year, with coastal regions being some of the most affected areas. This large-scale tree cutting in Diani Beach is part of this worrying trend and threatens to exacerbate climate change by reducing natural carbon sinks.

We propose the immediate cessation of the current tree cutting practices and the implementation of an eco-compliant line clearance program along the Colobridge–Beach Road corridor. This program should include stakeholder engagement, including input from local communities, environmental experts, and government bodies, to develop a sustainable approach that preserves the environment while meeting developmental needs.

Moreover, we urge the relevant authorities to conduct an environmental impact assessment before any future line clearance activities. This assessment should be transparent and made available to the public, ensuring accountability and informed decision-making.

We also advocate for reforestation efforts that focus on replanting native species to restore the ecological balance and support the local economy, which relies heavily on ecotourism. It is imperative that we act now to protect Diani Beach's environment and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.

We can no longer afford to ignore the damage being done to our natural heritage. Join us in our call for immediate change. Please sign this petition to demand that the authorities take swift and meaningful action to protect Diani Beach from further environmental degradation.

FORMAL DEMANDS:

We, the undersigned residents, registered conservation organizations, business owners, and civic stakeholders of Diani and Ukunda, hereby demand that the Management of KPLC, under the oversight of NEMA and the Kwale County Government, immediately institute the following corrective measures:

  1. Immediate Cease-and-Desist: Halt all active tree-cutting, lopping, and clearing operations along the Colobridge–Beach Road corridor pending a formal multi-stakeholder review.

  2. Mandatory Stakeholder Consultation: Establish a formal, transparent consultative framework with Colobus Conservation, local environmental arborists, and community representatives prior to resuming any vegetation management.

  3. Adoption of Standardized Arboricultural Practices: Transition from destructive topping to scientifically recognized, humane line-clearance methodologies that maintain safe line clearance while preserving the biological integrity and structural stability of the canopy.

  4. Ecological Rehabilitation: Partner with local conservation entities to finance and execute an immediate habitat restoration and indigenous replanting scheme to mitigate the damage already inflicted upon the corridor.
