Action On Derogatory Dialogue in FOX Sitcom Misrepresenting Indian Culture

The Issue

I am an Indian woman who has experienced firsthand the repercussions of harmful stereotypes perpetuated by mainstream media. Recently, a dialogue from a FOX sitcom caught my attention that was not only derogatory but also spread misinformation about Indian culture and societal norms. This dialogue insinuated certain aspects of sexual behavior and unfairly targeted Indian women, blaming Indian men for hate speech allegedly targeting white women in America.

This is not just about a single dialogue or episode; it's about the larger issue of misrepresentation and cultural insensitivity that can lead to real-world harm. In my case, I found myself being questioned on my sexual freedom - something I had never faced back home in India. It made me question where such misconceptions originate from, and more often than not, they stem from movie/TV show tropes.

According to a study by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (2017), only 3% of characters in top-grossing films were Asian or Asian American. This underrepresentation coupled with inaccurate portrayals can lead to harmful stereotypes becoming normalized.

We demand that FOX acknowledges this issue within their sitcoms, issues an apology for the offensive dialogue, takes steps towards rectifying this misrepresentation by consulting cultural experts when creating content related to different cultures, especially those often misrepresented like ours.
