Update on the “New Girl” Scene: Legal Protections, Creative Freedom, and Why We’re Speaking Up

Thank you all for your continued support and signatures—this petition is about standing up for what we believe is respectful representation while honoring the principles of free expression.

To provide more context: The scene in question is from New Girl Season 3, Episode 21 (“Big News”), aired in 2014. In it, Nick (trying awkwardly to cope with a recent breakup) rambles about a documentary he watched on monkeys. He mentions behaviors including masturbation, in the context of comparing it to human post-breakup emotions. The location isn’t explicitly named as India, but certain details (common tropes about monkeys in temples or public spaces) make it easily inferable to many viewers, potentially reinforcing stereotypes.

U.S. law strongly protects this kind of dialogue under the First Amendment:

•  There is no “hate speech” exception—speech cannot be censored or punished by the government simply for being offensive, stereotypical, or hurtful to feelings.

•  For a sitcom like New Girl (originally on FOX broadcast TV, now streaming), the FCC regulates only obscenity, indecency, or profanity during certain hours. General comedic dialogue, even if edgy or potentially insensitive, does not qualify for restriction.

•  Artistic and satirical content in entertainment receives even broader protections, allowing creators to explore uncomfortable or provocative topics.

This means the scene is fully legally protected—removing or editing it retroactively would face significant constitutional hurdles.

So why create this petition, even if it might seem like a long shot?

Because free speech works both ways.

The writers and actors said their piece through the show. Now, we’re exercising our free speech to make our objections known peacefully and publicly. We’re voicing concern over dialogue that some find derogatory or stereotypical, hoping to encourage more thoughtful representation in media without demanding censorship.

Petitions like this spark conversation, raise awareness, and show networks/streaming platforms (like Hulu, Disney+, or others carrying New Girl) that audiences care about cultural sensitivity. Even if change doesn’t happen overnight, collective voices can influence future content and remakes.

We’re not alone in this—robust, open dialogue (including criticism) is what keeps creative freedom healthy and accountable.

Thank you for being part of that dialogue. Please keep sharing the petition and this update!

(As always, this is based on established First Amendment principles and FCC rules. Creative expression thrives when we all participate respectfully.)
