During a recent visit to the Montebello Barnyard Zoo in Montebello, CA, I was deeply troubled by the living conditions of the animals. What I witnessed was a clear indication of negligence and a lack of care that these animals so rightfully deserve. Large animals were confined to small, heavily soiled enclosures, deprived of the space necessary for healthy movement. The cows at the zoo are kept in severely restricted areas, with the older cow never being allowed outside and the younger one sporadically. The conditions suggest a lack of exercise that could lead to distress and health issues for these majestic creatures.

Equally disturbing was the lack of oversight and supervision by the staff. Visitors, including children, were seen hitting the animals without any staff intervention or guidance, which raises serious ethical and safety concerns. Zoos are meant to be educational environments where people, especially children, can learn to respect and appreciate animals—not places where animals are treated poorly and with indifference.

We urge local authorities and animal welfare organizations to conduct a thorough inspection of the Montebello Barnyard Zoo.
