Demand an Independent Investigation into the Death of Chelsea Bear

We are calling on the Government of Saskatchewan to launch an independent, transparent, and publicly accountable investigation into the death of Chelsea Bear, a 36 year old mother and member of Flying Dust First Nation who tragically died while giving birth to twins in August 2026.

According to reports from Chelsea’s family and Indigenous leaders, Chelsea sought medical care while 36 weeks pregnant with twins after experiencing significant pain and bleeding. She was reportedly sent home before returning as her condition worsened. She was later transferred to Saskatoon, where one of her babies was stillborn and Chelsea died following a hemorrhage associated with placental abruption.

Her death has raised serious concerns among her family and Indigenous leaders about whether her symptoms were appropriately assessed and whether racism, discrimination, delays in care, or systemic barriers may have contributed to the outcome.

This case cannot be separated from the broader reality of anti Indigenous racism within Canada's healthcare system. Indigenous women have long reported experiences of being dismissed, stereotyped, discriminated against, and denied culturally safe care. These experiences are part of a larger history of colonialism and systemic inequity that continues to affect access to healthcare and health outcomes for Indigenous communities.

We are demanding an investigation that examines:

• Whether Chelsea’s concerns and symptoms were taken seriously
• Whether there were delays in assessment, diagnosis, transfer, or treatment
• Whether systemic racism or bias played any role in the care she received
• Whether rural healthcare barriers or inadequate resources contributed to delays
• Whether appropriate communication occurred with Chelsea and her family
• What systemic changes are necessary to prevent another tragedy

Most importantly, Chelsea’s family and Indigenous leadership must have a meaningful voice in the investigation and in determining the changes that follow.

Chelsea was a mother, daughter, community member, and loved one. Her family deserves answers. Indigenous women deserve healthcare where they are listened to, respected, and treated with dignity.

We are asking the Government of Saskatchewan to investigate Chelsea Bear’s death independently, transparently, and with Indigenous leadership at the table.
